American Girl in Italy

We’ve all seen the famous image of the American Girl In Italy from Ruth Orkin in poster shops around the country and we’ve all made our assessment of the scene.  Was she being harassed?  Was it a staged photo?  And what’s actually behind the story?

The story goes that the American Girl, Ninalee “jinx” Allen Craig, met up with another American girl, Ruth Orkin and they decided to do a piece on women traveling alone in Europe in the ’50’s.  The now famous photo took two takes and all of the men acted naturally and as they would regardless of a camera or not…. read more here  \
